A loan of $675 helped to buy fruits and ingredients.

Ines María's story

The members of the “Rocafuerte” communal bank get together every two weeks in the Rocafuerte settlement. This area is known all around the country for the delicious sweets prepared by the local people.

Here we meet 53 year old Inés. She is married and has three adult children. One of her sons is single and still lives with her. Her husband is a bit sick and can’t work.

In order to get her family ahead, she earns an honest living doing something she enjoys, running the juice bar at one of the Rocafuerte schools. She sells natural juices, fruits, and healthy snacks so that the children will grow well. She also prepares food for some of the teachers and certain students who eat lunch there. She works from Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 2:00pm and tells us that she’s been doing this for four years and that she began with her first loan.

She will use the money from this loan to buy fruits and ingredients that she will use to prepare the food. She’s been a member of the communal bank for four years and she enjoys it because of the benefits she receives from the institution.

She hopes to someday have a major point of sale in the city center.
