A loan of $900 helped to buy ingredients.

Jesefa Del Rosario's story

The members of the Rocafuerte communal bank get together in the Rocafuerte settlement every two weeks. This area is known for its delicious sweets prepared by the local people and are known throughout the country.

Here we meet 53 year old Josefa. She is married and has four adult children, but two of them still live with her. Her husband has been sick for some time and is not able to work. One of their children is a medical student.

She makes and sells sweets of different flavors and types. She also sells sheets and bedspreads door to door. She works every day from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm making and selling sweets and in the evenings she sells the sheets that she buys directly from the factory. She tells us that she has been doing this for several years and thanks to God she has been able to get her children ahead in life.

She will use this loan to buy more supplies, such as sugar, chocolate, fruit, etc. to prepare her sweets. She will also buy sheets and bedspreads. This will be her communal bank’s fifth cycle and she is grateful for the additional benefits that the institution provides through the ease of obtaining loans.

Her dream is to see her son graduate from medical school and become a great doctor.
