A loan of $3,925 helped a member to buy food products.

El Pedregal De San Jorge (Portoviejo) Group's story

Every two weeks, the members of the "El Pedregal de San Jorge" community bank meet in San Jorge, in the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, which has been known for many years as the City of the Royal Tamarind Trees.

This is a group of people who decided to come together and form a loan group which would be very helpful as they can use the loans to improve their small businesses. They work in a range of different business activities such as farming, general commerce, services, etc.

Here we meet 43 year-old Enma who is married and has three children aged 17, 16 and 3. Her two eldest are in high school.

Enma is a very good housewife who, in order to make some money herself, prepares and sells food. She makes sandwiches and dishes for parties. She also makes 'pastelillos' (similar to empanadas), 'morcillas rellenas' (blood sausage), bread rolls and other delicious dishes and sandwiches. She makes all her food to order. She tells us that she has orders every week and she works the three last days of every week. She has been in this business for six years and things are going very well as she assures us that her dishes are the best.

Enma will use this loan to buy food products to prepare her delicious dishes. This is her first loan cycle with her community bank and she likes it because the loans are disbursed quickly.

Enma's dream is for her children to become professionals.
