Mercedes Aurora's story

In the sector known as Guabito in the city of Portoviejo, the members of the Communal Bank “Amor Y Felicidad” (Love and Happiness) meet every 15 days. Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, has been known for many years as the city of “Los Reales Tamarindos”.

It is in this place that one can meet Sra. Mercedes. She is 38 years old, married, and has three children (ages 16, 13, and 8). The two older children are in high school and the youngest attends elementary school. Her husband is a merchant. Mercedes has been with the Communal Bank from the beginning and enjoys being a member because the loans have been very important to her business and for her personal life.

She is an excellent homemaker who also sells clothing through catalogs of various national and foreign brands. In addition, Mercedes sells products made by Yanbal (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes, and women’s accessories). She works three days a week, offering her products on credit and collecting payments each week. The Yanbal products are shipped to her house and she acquires the clothing from a distributor. Mercedes has been in business for four years and has done very well. She says that she started her business out of necessity because she had to earn her own income. Since she did not have a job, she decided to start this business and now earns a good income.

This loan will be used to buy perfumes, crèmes, cosmetics, and clothing of all types. Her dream is to open a boutique.
