A loan of $1,100 helped to buy eight sheep to fatten.

Flora's story

Flora is a member of the communal bank "Virgen de la Asuncion" (Virgin of the Assumption), located in the district and province of Yunguyo in the department of Puno. She is 67 years old. She is a widow and has 5 children (4 are independent). Flora went to school up to the second year of primary school.

She buys and sells sheep. She says that she buys them in Huacullani and sells them in the livestock markets. She has been working with the Manuela Ramos Movement for 10 years. Her first loan was for 300 PEN, money that she used to buy a sheep. With this new loan of 3000 PEN, she will buy eight sheep to fatten for four months and then sell at a good price. She also tells us that she farms, producing potatoes, forage such as barley for the animals, and oats to fatten the animals. She also makes chuño (processed potatoes). This lady works alone; sometimes her children help her when they come to visit her. Her dream is to have a vehicle for transportation to the fairs and to buy animals; with it, she would acquire more earnings. What she likes about the communal bank are the meetings and the communication with the other members.
