Galinda Mercedes's story

Galinda Mercedes, 41, is single living with her children who are 15 and 10 years of age in El Progreso that belongs to Chillanes Canton.

The members of the “El Progreso” (Progress) communal bank are located 15 minutes from the Chillanes office. There are 13 members and this is their third loan request to the cooperative. The members of this communal bank are cocoa bean, corn, banana, soya and manioc farmers.

Galinda Mercedes farms cocoa beans, corn, banana, soya and manioc; she also raises livestock. She makes her purchases in Chillanes and in San Pablo and her sales take place in the Chillanes Sunday market.

The loan will help her buy farming supplies, fertilizer and manure for the crops and feed for the livestock. The loan has helped her in that she increased crop yields. She has faced challenges like illness among her laborers and infestations and illnesses in the crops. Her dream is to buy more land to continue farming and to buy more livestock.

She enjoys bathing in the river with her children.
