A loan of $1,150 helped a member to pay for farm inputs, seeds, and sundry supplies and equipment.

Benkadi 2 Group's story

Benkadi 2 is a group composed of married women from the village of DIGAN in the sub-prefecture of OUELESSEBOUGOU, Region of KOULIKORO (2nd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They live in traditional families and average 45 years of age and six children. And they grow peanuts, okra, etc.

Concerned about making their plantations profitable, the group members decided to join the loan program of the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso. They are now on their fifth farm loan.

MADJE, who is standing in the middle in the photo, intends to use her loan to buy a sufficient quantity of peanut seeds, sundry supplies and equipment, and some farm inputs at the grand market of OUELESSEBOUGOU.

Following the off-season, the harvested crops are stocked for a certain time, so that they gain in value. And then they are sold retail (often in bulk) for cash at the grand market of OUELESSEBOUGOU, BAMAKO, and at surrounding markets. The customers come generally from large cities.

After selling her produce, MADJE plans on making a profit of 55,000 francs CFA that will be used for paying the loan interest and for typical family expenses.
