A loan of $1,450 helped a member to pay for plowing and buy seeds, fertilizers, herbicides and farming tools.

Benkadi 5 Group's story

The ten members of Benkadi 5 Group ("Harmony") are married women who, on average, are 32 years old and have four children. Most of them live in polygamous families in Kantela, one of the villages in the municipality of Massigui, prefecture of Dioïla (second administrative region of Mali). They work with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to deal more efficiently with their activities when the winter season begins. They grow, among other products, small millet, rice and groundnuts. This is their fifth loan with the institution.

Kadiatou, the first woman standing at the left-hand side of the photo and wearing a white scarf, intends to use her new loan to buy agricultural supplies and tools and pay for plowing. She has around 0.8 hectares of farmland to grow small millet and groundnuts. The harvest will be sold in the city of Massigui to a clientele made up of men and women. The group members expect to make an average profit of around 40,000 CFA francs per season.
