Akhalsheni, Georgia / Cheese Making

A loan of $1,525 helped to pay for construction materials for cheese storehouse construction.

Giorgi's story

Giorgi comes from village Akhalsheni, Samtskhe-Javakheti Region. He is 52 years old and lives with his wife Marine. The source of income for the family is agricultural activities. They run a dairy farm with seven milk cows and six calves. Giorgi and Marine produce approximately 200 kg cheese per month and sell it locally to dairy product retailers. Also the family owns 0.75 hectare of land, where four tons of potatoes and 250 kg of haricot beans are grown per year. The vegetables are sold locally. Average monthly profit of the family is 600 Laris.

With the requested credit Giorgi plans to construct a storehouse for cheese. With the storehouse he won't have to sell the whole amount of cheese shortly after production, but can store it for months and sell when prices for cheese go up – in winter and early spring.

Using the storehouse will significantly increase the profit of the family (by 30 – 40%). Giorgi plans to use the increase in profit for further expansion of the farm through purchasing additional milk cows
