A loan of $850 helped to purchase cold cuts to meet the demand from 250 school cafeterias.

Gladys's story

Gladys is 59 years old and she is a hardworking woman with a spirit of independence. She lives in the community of Las Dunas in the city of Barranquilla. She has 5 children, aged 24 to 35. She dreams of being able to always help them and to see them prosper in their future.

Gladys has a business preparing and selling fast foods. She has a well equipped cart where she prepares her foods and it serves as a meeting point for her clients who delight in the hamburgers, hot dogs, salchipapas (a traditional Peruvian food consisting of sausages and french fries), and kebabs, etc.

She started her business 5 years ago when she became separated from her husband to have a source of support and to provide for her family in an assured manner. She also sells to 8 schools under contract and to 250 children's cafeterias to the southwest of Barranquilla, those that subscribe to nutritional programs by the state. Her goal is to expand her business and to add an internet cafe. This will be a new source of income and it will help as a learning opportunity for her children.

Her Kiva loan is the first loan that Gladys receives through Fundacion Mario Santo Domingo. With it she will purchase ingredients such as cold cuts to meet the demand from the 250 school cafeterias that have already contracted her. She requires the working capital to purchase in cash and in greater quantities to qualify for discounts. As Gladys works to achieve her dreams, she reports a sales profit of no less than 30%.
