Mary is a resident and farmer in the Litein area in South Rift Kenya. She is 48 years old and has 8 children, 5 of whom are stil in school. She has been in farming for 15 years and employs two farmhands. Her farm produces milk, which is sold to the Brookside Dairies which go to the local market.
Mary has requested a loan of 31,600 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says the income generated will be used to repay the loan and improve her family's living standards. She says she wants to breed cows that will give 30 litres per day in the future.
Mary laments the challenges of animal diseases and animal feed.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
