A loan of $950 helped to buy perfume, creams, cosmetics and clothes.

Rosa Elena's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Subidita al Cielo' community bank meet in an area known as 'La Subidita al Cielo', in San Pablo neighborhood, in the city of Portoviejo. This is a very densely-populated, poor area of the city.

Rosa is a founding member of her community bank. She is also the bank's president. She likes the ease with which she can obtain loans since they do not have so many requirements. Rosa is 48 years old, married, and has two grown-up children who live independently. Her husband is a taxi driver.

Rosa is a good home maker who, in order to make her own money and help her husband in the hard task of running their household, also sells clothes and Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes and ladies' accessories) through catalogs. She makes her sales door to door and works every day. She leaves her products with her customers on credit and collects payment every fortnight. She receives her products in her home and gets her clothes in the city center, from a distributor. She has been selling Yanbal products for three years and just started selling clothes with her previous loan. She tells us that she has sold quite a lot.

Rosa will use this loan to buy perfume, creams, cosmetics and clothes since she has some orders to fill. Her dream is to have a larger business.
