A loan of $900 helped to purchase rice, meat, fish, and other ingredients.

Letty Margarita's story

The members of the Communal Bank “Subidita al Cielo” meet every 15 days in area with the same name in the neighborhood of San Pablo. This marginal urban area is the most populated section of the city of Portoviejo.

It is here that one can meet Sra. Letty. She is 46 years old, separated from her spouse, and has an adult daughter who lives with her. Letty is a determined woman who has always worked hard from the time her daughter was very young because she had to play the role of both father and mother. She currently manages a restaurant in one of the busiest parts of the city. Letty sells a variety of dishes that all of her customers enjoy, including lunches and à la carte items. She works every day and has help from her daughter and her sister. Letty says that she previously sold lunches by taking orders, but the loans she received last year helped her to secure a location. She says that she has done very well because her customers prefer the taste of her unique dishes.

This loan will be used to buy rice, meat, fish, and other ingredients for preparing her food. She is the founder of the Communal Bank and has participated in five loan cycles. Letty enjoys being a member because the loans have helped her to establish her business.

Her dream is to own her location since she currently uses a large part of her earnings to pay rent.
