The client Mutima is the representative of the business group “Noah’s Ark,” is an entrepreneur, 50 years old, married, and the mother of six. All her children study; some are already university students and others have their own households. She sells used clothing and is a member of a modern sewing shop. Her husband is a university professor. She displays her goods by the road, in front of her home. She has been in this business for 20 years.

She just finished nine loan cycles with Hekima. This new loan will allow her to purchase two bales of used clothing. In addition, her goal is to provide for her children’s education and to buy a house on the land plot she has bought thanks to the income from her business. She thanks Hekima for its work in support of impoverished women who don’t have access to the classical bank system. It needs to be noted that the majority of “Noah’s Ark” group members are women. Some mothers are seen in the photo joyfully holding their babies; some women’s faces are hard to see because the entire group had to fit into the picture.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
