A loan of $200 helped to purchase additional stocks of clothing in bulk.

Eliza's story

Greetings from Mbeya, Tanzania! Eliza M. is 27 years old. She is married with three children. In 2000, Eliza established a used clothing business. She now requires a loan of $200 in order to purchase additional stock in bulk.

Second-hand clothing comes across the ocean from America and Europe. They are then washed, ironed and sold in bulk by wholesalers in Dar es Salaam to retailers who then re-wash and re-iron them for sale on the streets. The clothes are becoming increasingly popular, especially amongst the younger generation, because they are so cheap and because of the general appeal of anything western or modern.
