A loan of $1,100 helped buy a better quality cow.

Petrona's story

Pterona is a member of the "San Juan D. Tahuaco" communal bank located in the town of Tahuaco, Yunguyo district, Yunguyo province, and Puno department. She is 52 years old, married, and has 7 children (3 of them independent). She studied primary education but never finished. Petrona works with her husband and children. The buy and sell livestock such as sheep and cows. Her first loan was worth $300 Peruvian Soles which she used for her business. She has been working with the Manuela Ramos Movement for 14 years.
With this new $3,000 Peruvian soles loan she will buy a better quality cow. She tells us that once she buys her livestock she fattens them up for four months, then sells them locally in Yunguyo. She also says that she sells peas and potatoes in Yunguyo and Desaguadero where her husband and children help her.
Her dream is to have more livestock to make more profits.
What she likes about the communal bank are the meetings and the ease of getting loans.
