A loan of $675 helped to buy pants, t-shirts, blouses and children's clothes.

Elfa Bolivia's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Nueva Estrella Solidaria' community bank meet in Municipal neighborhood, in the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí. This city has been known for many years as the 'city of the royal tamarind trees'.

Here we meet 49 year-old Elfa who lives with her common-law husband. She has six children. Two of her children are grown up and the other four are in high school and elementary school. Her husband is a driver.

Elfa is a great homemaker who also sells all kinds of clothes. She makes her sales door to door and also sells from her home where her customers come when she receives new merchandise. She tells us that she also works filling orders that her customers make with her. She works every afternoon. Elfa leaves her goods on credit and collects payment every two weeks. She buys her merchandise in Portoviejo and she is also sent some from Guayaquil. She has been in this business for four years and is doing very well.

Elfa will use this loan to buy more merchandise such as pants, blouses, t-shirts and children's clothes. She has been a member of her community bank since the beginning and she likes it because the loans have helped her to get ahead in life.

Elfa's dream is to see her children finish their studies and become good professionals.
