A loan of $900 helped to buy clothing, shoes, fabrics, yarns, buttons and other sewing materials.

Mercy Auxiliadora's story

The members of the "Nueva Estrella Solidaria" (New Star Solidarity) Communal Bank meet every two weeks in the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabi. The city has been known for many years as the City of the Royal Tamarinds.

Here we met Mercy, who is 32 years old, married and has three children, ages 11, 3 and 1 years old. The eldest is in school. Her husband is a merchant seaman and works in the Galapagos. Several years ago Mercy learned dressmaking at an academy in the city.

Mercy has a small sewing shop in her house where she sews all types of clothes and also tailors clothing. In addition, she also sells clothes and shoes through catalogs of various brands. She works based on orders, selling products made in her workshop and she also sometimes goes door to door. Mercy works every day from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm and sometimes even later when she has orders to deliver. Mercy started selling these products since the communal bank began, and has been sewing even longer.

This new loan will be used to buy clothes, shoes, fabrics, buttons, thread and other sewing materials. Mercy has completed six cycles in the communal bank and likes it because her business started with a loan.

Her dreams are to have a bigger workshop and to be a great businesswoman.
