Meliton's story

Melitón, 32, lives in the Palomar community (central Peruvian jungle) in a rented house with his wife, Yesenia. As any good man living in the country he is dedicated to farming, which is his main source of income, like many in the area. For three years he has been working the land and obtained many things, among which is his own 3-acre patch of land on which he grows coffee and bananas. Everyday he works from the early morning hours taking care of his crops because he knows the money he gets for his produce will depend on harvest quality. He sells his crops in the La Merced market which is where he gets the most money. During coffee season he sells his product to a co-op in the Sanchirio del Palomar community.

What he enjoys most about his work is harvest time, when he can reap the fruits of his months of hard work. He also works as a farm laborer on other farms, where they pay him extra for the care he gives to crops. In the future he hopes to be able to save enough money to buy a house. He is a member of the communal bank "AROMA DE CAFÉ" and this is his third loan through MFP. He hopes this financial support will help him meet his goals. He is committed to paying it back on time, as he has done previously. He enjoys being part of the communal bank because all the members are responsible and supportive people. If Melitón receives your support he will invest the money in several sacks of organic and natural fertilizer (called "guano de isla"), to use on his coffee and banana crops.
