A loan of $1,125 helped a member to buy fertilizer, seeds and small equipment.

Benkadi Ii Group's story

Group Benkadi II is composed of ten married women from the village of Dangasso, San prefecture in Ségou region (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They live in traditional families. They are on average 38 years old with at least seven children.
They cultivate groundnuts, fonio and sesame. In order to make their farms more profitable, the group's members have decided to be a part of Soro Yiriwaso's loan program for three years now. Having successfully repaid previous loans, they are on their third farming loan.
Mariam, the group's president, is the first woman standing to the right of the picture, with a blue-speckled white scarf. She plans on using her loan to purchase sufficient quantities of groundnut and fonio seeds, as well as small equipment and agricultural inputs, from the great market of San. After the rainy season, crops are stored for a certain time to gain value before they are sold at the great markets of San and Kimparana, and on neighboring markets, either retail or (often) wholesale, to customers who mostly come from larger cities.
After selling their agricultural products, the members of the Benkadi II group plan on making each a profit comprised between 31,000 and 49,000 FCFA, which will be used to repay the loan's interest and for the family's daily expenses.
