A loan of $725 helped to buy bags of organic fertilizer.

Elsa's story

Elsa, 31, lives in Puente Capelo (in the Central Peruvian forest). She lives with Nilton, her partner of 12 years. They have two daughters, Tatiana and Jocelyn. She started farming at an early age, since "agriculture" is the main economic activity in the area. But for the last 12 years, she and her husband have been farming coffee, avocados, and bananas independently. Every morning, they drive to their fields, where they clean, plant, and harvest their crops. When the crops are ready, they sell them to Alicia, who has a depot in the area. From there, their fruit is taken around the country. What they like about the work is that they can be together as a family for most of the day. But they hate seeing their crops ruined by the weather. At the moment, they have begun the coffee harvest; they will use the money they get to improve their home and thereby give their children a better quality of life.

Elsa is a member of the "Flor de café" community bank, and this is her third loan with MFP. She promises to pay her installments on time, as she has always done before. She is glad to be part of the community bank because all the members are responsible and very friendly people, She will use the loan to buy bags of organic fertilizer to spread around her coffee plants and "island"-variety bananas.
