Rayen Mapu Group's story

This community bank is called “Rayen Mapu” and it has 18 members who live in the city of Temuco. They all work in different businesses but they mainly sell used and new clothes and make handicrafts.

María appears in the center of the group wearing a green cardigan with her hair tied back. Her business is selling drinks, beer, cigarettes, chocolates and food. She sells all these products door to door in a rural sector of the city of Temuco since there aren't any businesses in the countryside. María transports her merchandise in a truck.

María buys her merchandise in wholesale supermarkets every two weeks. She has been in this business for two years. She will use her loan to buy drinks and beer, and bundles of used clothes since she also sells clothes in the countryside. Her goals for her business are to continue investing in merchandise so that she can supply these rural sectors with products since her customers don't have an established store where they can buy goods.

María lives with her husband and her three children aged 15, 10 and 2.

María is very happy and grateful for the support that Fondo Esperanza have offered her since her loans have allowed her to invest in her business. She also likes the meetings that she attends since she has learned how to organize her business incomings and outgoings and she enjoys the pleasant company of the other members of her bank.

Temuco is the capital of Araurcanía region. The city is located 670km south of Santiago (the capital of Chile). In the surrounding areas there are a series of lakeside spas (Pucón, Villarica) and very striking native flora and fauna in nearby nature reserves. 50% of the country's population of mapuches (indigenous people) live in this region.
