A loan of $1,000 helped to buy supplies for his farming business.

Walter Ivan's story

Walter Ivan, 30, lives with his partner and their four children who are 9-, 5-, 4- and 3-years old, respectively. They live in San Pablo parrish in the Ecuadorean canton of San Miguel.

The members of the UNION Y ESPERANZA community bank meet in San Pablo, some 30 minutes from our office in San Miguel. The members of the bank are famers. They grow maize, potatoes and vegetables, among other crops.

Walter grows maize and corn. He's built his farm over many years. He buys supplies in San Miguel and sells his products in the markets in San Pablo and San Miguel.

Walter is applying for a loan to buy seeds for his next maize and corn crop. The loan will help him increase his production and, in turn, his income. The challenges he faces include a shortage of workers and vagaries in the weather that damage his crops. His dream is to buy land.

Walter likes to watch sports and go to local festivals.
