A loan of $925 helped to buy three sacks of chuño, two sacks of potatoes, two sacks of quinoa, and meat.

Hilda's story

Hilda is a member of the "3 de Mayo" ("May 3rd") Communal Bank, located in the Llave district, El Collao province, department of Puno. She is 25 years old, in a common-law marriage, and has one son. Hilda has a secondary school education.

She works buying and selling regional grains like potato and chuño [traditional Peruvian freeze-dried potatoes], as well as meat. Hilda has been working with Movimiento Manuela Ramos for six years. She used her last loan of 300 nuevos soles to invest in her business. With this new loan of 2,500 nuevos soles, she will buy three sacks of chuño, two sacks of potatoes, two sacks of quinoa, and meat.

Hilda says that she buys all of her products at the markets of Puno and Juliaca and sells them in the city of Arequipa. She gets help with the business from her brother and from her husband, who also runs a motorcycle-taxi.

Her dream is to have more capital and for her business to grow enough that she can travel to Lima and Tacna.

Hilda's favorite thing about her communal bank is the meetings, because her fellow members are fun.
