A loan of $1,000 helped to buy seven quintals of flour, lard, sugar, yeast and salt.

Graciela's story

Graciela is a member of the “3 de Mayo” (May 3) communal bank located in Ilave District, El Collao Province, Puno Department. She is 31 years old, married and has three children. She only finished 8th grade. She’s been working with the Manuela Ramos Movement for the last 8 years. Her first loan was for 300 new soles that she invested in her bakery. She will use this new 2700 new sol loan to buy seven quintals of flour, lard, sugar, yeast and salt. She tells us that she uses one quintal of flour per day and on holidays she uses three quintals of flour. Graciela works alongside her husband who also works providing mototaxi service and is a master bricklayer. Those are occasional jobs that allow him to cover other family expenses. Her dream is to have a kneader to continue working in the bakery. What she likes about the communal bank is the meetings and the talks.
