A loan of $925 helped to buy 50 arrobas of quinoa.

Mery Elizabeth's story

Mery Elizabeth is a member of the “3 de Mayo” (May 3) communal bank located in Ilave District, El Collao Province and Puno Department. She’s 29 years old, married and has two children. She finished secondary school.

She’s been working with the Manuela Ramos Movement for the last three years. Her initial loan was for 300 new soles and she invested it in her grocery sales business. She currently sells grains from the region [potatoes, chuño (dehydrated, freeze dried potato), quinoa]. She will use this new, 2500 new sol, loan to buy 50 arrobas (1 arroba=11.5 kg. approx.) of quinoa.

She tells us that she buys her products in Desaguadero and sells them in the cities of Puno and Juliaca. Her husband is a farmer and raises livestock.

Her dream is owning a house in Puno and a large car to transport her merchandise. What she likes about the communal bank is the ease of the loans with month’s grace period and the savings.
