Santa Catarina Group's story

This group is called “Santa Catarina” and is composed of 11 indigenous women from the town of Santa Catarina Mechoacan. It is called Santa Catarina after the Santa Catarina Virgin since she’s the village’s patron saint. Mechoacan means “Place of the Fishermen.” This group is composed of indigenous, very hard working women who carry out various economic activities to support their homes economically. Gudelia, 33, is a single mother of three children who are in elementary school. She has a small, home-based business selling butchered chicken (cut into pieces) and mole (traditional chili sauce). She asked for the loan to buy more chicken so that her business can grow a bit more. She’s been in business for five years. She started because of the need she had to support her children and move them ahead. At the beginning, she started with just a few chickens, from 5-10 daily and her sales were door to door. This is how the business gradually grew and now she sells from 30-50 chickens. This business is very important to her because she’s able to support her children and proviD. them with an education. She strives daily so that her children will lack nothing. She is a woman who, despite life’s adversities, has gotten ahead. She is happy with her business because it produces good profits. She currently has many customers since she sells each piece of chicken for a good price and the treatment she gives her customers is good; because of this she continues to acquire new customers. Her main goal is that her children study a profession and to have a locale of her own for the business. The other group members are: Cecilia(Sells regional fast food), Leticia(Sells regional fast food), Cristina(Sells regional fast food), María(Sells regional fast food), Rosa(Sells regional fast food), Cirina (Sells regional fast food), Tomasa (Chicken sales), Gudelia (Chicken sales), Raquel (Clothing sales), Zoila (Napkin manufacturing), Rogelia (Sales of stationery supplies).
