The communal bank "Flor Naciente" will start its third loan cycle with Pro Mujer; they meet in the Pro Mujer central office in Villa Exaltacion. The group has 8 members, and is led by a board of directors including the secretary, Seferina. This group has a variety of businesses: the members sell coca leaves, sew pants, sell vegetables, work as drivers in public transportation, sell salchipapas (a typical dish including sausages and fried potatoes), and sell plastic products.

Seferina tells us that she was invited to join Pro Mujer two years ago, and has been working with Pro Mujer ever since. Now she has a business selling coca leaves; other women merchants helped her to learn this business.

The loan that she will take now will be used to increase her working capital (to buy coca leaves.) She will make her purchases in Villa Fatima, and she sells her products in an itinerant manner. This form of working will allow her to generate resources to support her family; she lives in a common-law marriage and has 2 children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answered that she likes the savings and the gifts.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
