A loan of $1,100 helped to buy firewood.

Fatoumata's story

Married and the mother of five children, Madame Fatoumata is 43 years old. She lives with her spouse and their children in the Koko neighborhood of the Koutiala prefecture (Sikasso region).

For social reasons, Fatoumata did not have the opportunity to study, so she became interested in business at a young age. After trying several businesses without success, she began selling firewood decades ago. Madame Fatoumata finds that this business makes a good revenue and is going very well, as she is able to sell a trailer-load each week.

To satisfy her clients with more wood and increase the size of her business, she decided to seek assistance from the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso two years ago. She is on her third individual loan, and the two preceding ones were duly repaid.

With this loan she plans to buy two loads of firewood in the village of Koutiala. She sells daily in front of her home, for cash and credit to both men and women. She plans to make an average monthly profit of 100,000 CFA, which will be used to repay interest on the loan, help with the family's daily expenses, and invest in other income-generating activities.
