A loan of $4,100 helped a member to grow coffee.

El Cedro Group's story

In the State of Veracruz, in the town of Tezonapa, there is a community called El Cedro in which there is an 'UDE' (a group of more than ten people who have an account with the community bank and must meet up every one or two weeks to make their payments). This group was named in honor of the community in which its members live. It has eleven members.

The group's representative is called Emilia. She is 52 years old and has an elementary school level of education. Emilia is married and has three children (two daughters and one son): 24 year-old Graciela, 28 year-old Vicente and 21 year-old Vianey, who are all married. Currently, Emilia only lives with her husband. She tells us that she and her family have been growing and harvesting coffee for more than five years. Emilia, her husband and her son look after the crops, watering them and applying fertilizers. When the time comes to harvest the coffee, they provide work to some people in their community. After harvesting, they sell the coffee. Emilia tells us that they used to sell their coffee to a gentleman who owned a grinder but he closed down a couple of years ago and now they sell their produce within their own community and in some other nearby communities. They sometimes sell coffee cherries (which is when the coffee is mature) and sometimes they sell the beans.

Emilia needs this loan to invest in fertilizers for her crops. She tells us that she hopes to continue working in the future because the financial situation is very hard these days and you can only get ahead in life by working.
