María Eulalia's story

Maria is a member of the communal bank Despertar, meaning To Wake. She lives in the suburban region of the city of Cuenca. This city is the third most important in the country. The houses are a blend of the colonial and modern styles. The people retain their culture and traditions.

Maria is 43 years old, a single mother of 2 children, aged 20 and 18. Her eldest son works and helps her financially. Her youngest son attends school in the city. They don't own their own house so they rent.

Maria has been a janitor for the past 3 years, working half days from Monday to Friday. In her spare time she makes purses, having learned the business from a friend who taught her. She sells her product to her friends and acquaintances.

This is the first loan she has with her communal bank. She was invited to join by a friend who is an active member. The funds form her loan will be invested in the purchase of materials to make her purses.
