Elvira Sonia's story

Elvira is a member of the communal bank "Nuevo Amanecer," located in the Juli district of Chucuito province in the department of Puno. She is a 30 year-old widow who has 2 school-aged children. Elvira has completed some college coursework.

She has been working with the Movimiento Manuela Ramos organization for 8 years. Her first loan was for 300 Peruvian soles, money that she used as capital for her previous business selling handicrafts. Now she has a business selling groceries. She is requesting a new loan for 1,000 Peruvian soles that she will use to buy merchandise such as: rice, sugar, milk, cooking oil, chocolates and candies.

Elvira tells us that she is also in the business of selling cellular telephone minutes. She works alone in her business. Her dream is to have a store and be a wholesaler of groceries and candy in the town of Juliaca.

What she likes about her communal bank is the earnings she gets on her savings.
