Chann's Group
In this Group: Chann, Yoem, Hem, Hem, Yim
This group loan is made up of five borrowers, all residents of the rural area of Siem Reap Province. Mrs. Chann S. is chosen by the other members as the group head. Mrs. Chann S. is 49 years old and earns a living as a local tailor, sewing or mending clothes for the villagers. Her husband is skilled in building houses, a knowledge he uses to earn a living. They are blessed with five children, two of them drive a boat for tourists and the other three go to school. Mrs. Chann S. is asking a loan to buy a motorbike for her kids to ride to school as well as going anywhere.

The other four borrowers are:
Mrs. S. - She is requesting a loan to buy more merchandise to sell.
Mrs. P. - She is a grocery trader, who is applying for a loan to purchase additional grocery items for selling.
Mrs. N. - She is a fish vendor, who is applying for a loan to buy more fish to sell.
Mrs. S. - She is a fish-seller, who is seeking a loan to repair her old house.

About HKL

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
