A loan of $1,000 helped to buy perfumes, creams, cosmetics and costume jewelry.

Bernarda Angelica's story

In the Crucita parish, in Portoviejo Canton, we find a place known as "Los Arenales". Here the members of the communal bank "Fe y Esperanza" meet every two weeks. This area is known for its beautiful beaches, gastronomy and warmth of its people.

Here we meet Mrs. Bernarda, age 32, who is married and has three daughters, ages 13, 11 and 5 who are in school. Her husband is a fisherman.

She is a homemaker who earns her own income by selling Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume and ladies' accessories). She works three days a week and delivers her orders on a credit basis, collecting payment every one or two weeks, depending on each customer. She receives her products at home. She says she has been in business for five years and it has gone well for her. A friend of hers who does the same thing was the one to get her started.

This loan is to buy perfumes, creams, cosmetics and costomer jewelry. It is her third loan through the communal bank which she enjoys because of the benefits the institution offers.

Her dream is to have a pharmacy one day.
