Chernor's Group's story

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT), a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, is very pleased to present to you teachers from the TDEC Primary School, located in Magbass village, near Magburaka town, in northern Sierra Leone. TDEC was founded in 1993 by the Tonkolili District Council to help educate the people of Magbass village. Currently, the school has a staff of 16 dedicated teachers and an enrollment of 405 pupils.

Chernor B. is a teacher at the school and the leader of this group of borrowers. 48-year-old Chernor has been in the teaching profession for twenty-five years now. A native of Magbass village, Chernor is married to a businesswoman and the couple has four children – three in primary school and one in secondary school. Chernor has requested this loan in order to buy agricultural seeds and to pay laborers to plant his farm.

Staff from this institution, like many other schools' staff within SMT’s operational areas, come to SMT to apply for loans. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment, and pays SMT on their behalf.
