María Bertha's story

Mrs. María is a member of the Narancay Bajo Community Bank. She lives in the Vergel neighborhood in Cuenca City. This city was named a World Heritage Cultural Site in 1999 because of its beautiful colonial architecture in its historical center. Cuenca is the birthplace of athletes, painters, and artisans. It has a great variety of restaurants. Its people are friendly and polite.
Mrs. María is 30 years old. She is a single mother of two children, ages 10 and 2. Her first child attends a little school in the city. She doesn’t have her own house. She lives with her sister in a house that is on loan to her.
Mrs. María sells fruit. She has been doing this business for ten years. She works from Monday until Friday from six in the morning until five in the evening.
This is her second loan with the community bank. She is going to use the money to buy more fruit in order to continue expanding her business.
Her dream is to have her own house.
