A loan of $900 helped to buy perfume, cosmetics, creams, solder, iron, brass, etc.

María Alexandra's story

The “Río de Oro” (River of Gold) communal bank meets every two weeks in the La California neighborhood of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí, a city known for many years as the City of the Royal Tamarinds.

We met María, 19, here. She is married and expecting her first child. Her husband is a student and employed by the electric company. She is studying first semester of Nursing at the Manabí Technical University.

Besides studying she’s also a merchant. She sells Saisons and L'Bel brand products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfumes and women’s accessories). She works weekends almost the entire day but she also sells at the university where she attends classes. She sells on credit and collects weekly. She just started this activity last month and is doing very well. She is also taking out the loan for her husband’s business. He has a welding shop where he does all kinds of work with iron. He makes doors, windows and roofing structures, among others.

This loan is to buy perfume, creams, cosmetics and raw materials like solder, iron, brass, etc. for her husband’s business. This is the second cycle in the communal bank and she likes it because the payments are easy to make. Her dreams are to graduate and get a good job.
