Otilia Tomas's story

Otilia Tomas da Conceição T. was born in Xinavane, Maputo Province, in southern Mozambique. She is married and has three children, ages 27, 29 and 34, all of whom are no longer in school. She only completed 5th grade and didn't continue her schooling due to an early marriage. She lives in her own home with her family and supports her grandchildren, who live with her.

She left Xinavane for Boane District with her husband. She has land that she has been using to grow crops for over 18 years. She has one employee who helps her to prepare the land. She has monthly earnings of about 3,000 to 4,000 meticais on average, which she uses for household expenses and is sometimes able to save a portion in her bank account.

She has had loans at other banks, and learned of Hluvuku through partners of the institution. This is her seventh loan with Hluvuku, and is for 20,000 meticais. With the loan, she plans to purchase agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers, and other items) to increase the area of production.

She is committed to paying on schedule in order to obtain future loans. She plans to request new loans to increase the agricultural area and to become the largest producer of crops.
