Estrellitas De La Cumbre Group's story
Thirty-year-old Maria, a mother of two children who are three and eight years old, studied to be a kindergarten teacher. However, she was unable to secure employment and two years ago, opened a food business and sells prepared meals in a school on weekdays. She also raises chickens that she sells from her home. Her cousin helps her with the businesses. Maria’s income is essential to care for the family, since her husband left to find work in the United States. She requests her fourth Kiva loan to buy a stove, gas and pots/pans, as well as ingredients like meat, tomatoes and oil at the wholesale level. Her goal is to open up a restaurant!
Maria and six other women who live in the department/state of San Marcos participate in monthly educational training, part of the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program. Their Trust Bank is called “Estrellitas De La Cumbre”. Each month, a Facilitator shares information with them drawn from four areas including health, women’s issues, family matters and business. A recent topic has been about the importance of savings. They also learn about budgeting, planning and prioritizing expenses. The training helps them with their food, used clothing and animal husbandry businesses. Another member of the group has a convenience store and finds the training very useful. Other topics are centered around health, family matters and women’s issues.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand!
