Rita's story

Rita, 60, is an extraordinary woman. Despite having lost her husband 6 years ago, she is as lively and happy as she ever was. She has 8 children and lives in her own house in the small rural town of Casacoto. She learned farming when she was just a young girl and it's a life that suits her. "I like being in the country . . . it's peaceful and soothing", she says. She has run her own farm for 38 years now and she's added more and more land over the years, land that she hopes to pass on to her children so that they maintain "the family tradition". She mainly grows potatoes, beans and peas. She takes great care with her crops and says that her main hobby is clearing the weeds that grow in her fields. She also raises livestock, an extra source of revenue for her. Her main problem is a lack of working capital. She's not as strong as she used to be and, even though she no longer has a family to take care of, she wants to cut back on the number of hectares she farms. Rita belongs to the Sembradoras D. Casacoto community bank and this is her third MFP loan. She is pleased with the support that she's received from the association. Rita will buy supplies of organic manure that she will use to cultivate her pea crop.
