A loan of $900 helped to buy plastic products, household items and clothing.

Miriam Elizabeth's story

In the neighborhood of El Progreso in the city of Portoviejo, the communal bank ILUSIONES meets every two weeks. This is a marginal urban area of the city which is densley populated. It is known as the jail sector since the Portoviejo women's prison is located here.

Mrs. Miriam is a founding member of the communal bank which she enjoys because of the low interest rates it gives compared to other loan institutions and because it allows her to continue her business. She is 38 years old, a single mother and has a 13-year-old daughter who is in school. They live with Miriam's mother.

In addition to being a good mother, she also is a merchant and sells products by catalogue such as clothing, plastic articles and household items. She sells on a door-to-door basis and works every day in the mornings. She has been involved in this activity for several years and so far it has been successful. She also has a beauty and personal care service which she provides in her home or door-to-door. When doing this she offers her other products for sale.

She plans to use the loan to buy plastic products, houshold articles and clothing for which she has already taken orders.

Her dream is to have her own house one day.
