A loan of $1,075 helped to buy fertilizer.

Sofa's story

Sofa is 65 years old and is a hard working woman. She lives with her husband and has nine children, three of whom still live at home. They live in Tiambra. She leaned to work the land when she was a little girl, but at age 25 she started her own farming business, raising peas, potatoes, which are sold in the main Tarma market. This helps bring economic stability to her, to her husband, and to her children.

Along with farming, Sofa also makes cheese from the milk from her 10 cows. She tells us that she takes all of the foodstuffs to the city fair to sell by the kilogram. Sometimes she travels to the central jungle to sell her milk products in bulk.

Now she is considering planting “única” and “yungay” potatoes to be able to harvest in a good season and be able to pay for her children’s’ educational expenses. She is a member of the “Santa Rosa D. Tiambra” communal bank. This will be her ninth loan through MFP, and she is grateful for the support she has gotten over the years. She will use the money to buy sacks of organic (coral) fertilizer to spread on her pea crop.
