A loan of $850 helped to cultivate limes and repair her corn grinder.

Leonarda's story

Leonarda lives in a community called Paso Rinco, which is located in Cuenca del Papaloapan. This community is known for producing limes. There is a tradition in which during harvest time, the whole family gets together to go work in the lime orchards; everyone, from the grandparents to the grandchildren, participate in the harvest.

Leonarda tells us that she learned to farm limes from the time she was very young, and when she got married and had children, she taught them to farm them, too. She tells us that “Farming limes is nice because we work together as a family to make our daily living.”

Leonarda not only farms limes, she also has a small cornmeal grinder where she grinds corn for her friends and neighbors in the community. She says that she has to get up at 5:00 every morning to begin work because in her community people still eat hand-made tortillas.

She needs this loan to buy fertilizers for her lime trees and also to buy a few replacement pieces and make some repairs to her corn grinder.
