Mariana M. baptized her food business as "L. casa D. las empanadas". She has six children and lives with her husband in "L. Heroica" which is the name given to the beautiful city of Cartagena D. Indianas in northern Colombia. Since she was a little girl she has enjoyed cooking and as soon as she was old enough began working as a cook. There she realized that she could generate her own income independently and began preparing and selling delicious cakes. She then added fried foods, snacks and finally tamales and pastries. This is how she started out and eventually was contracted by event organizers.

Her biggest challenge is the lack of capital to fill customer orders. So to improve her company's liquidity she went to the Santo Domingo Foundation and requested a loan through Kiva. She plans to use the loan to buy ingredients to make tamales and special foods that have already been ordered.

Her dream is to have her own grand restaurant one day.
