A loan of $1,100 helped to buy hair dyes, perms, hair treatments, etc.

Mayra Jacqueline's story

Every two weeks the 'Mujeres con Esperanza' (Hopeful Women) community bank meets in Eloy Alfaro parish, in the city of Manta. This place is well known for its beautiful beaches which are very popular year round with both national and foreign tourists. It is one of the most important ports in the country and in America, and is situated on the Pacific coast.

Here we meet 29 year-old Mayra who is married and has two children aged 9 and 8 who are in school. Her husband is a photographer. This is her fourth loan cycle as a member of her community bank and she likes it because the members are all responsible in making their repayments.

Mayra has a beauty salon in Cuba neighborhood, in Manta. She rents premises in which she carries out different treatments such as hair colorings, haircuts, manicures, etc. She works from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8.00am to 8.00pm. She also sells beauty products and hair treatments in her salon where she has some display cabinets. Mayra has been in this business for five years and she tells us that she has gradually increased her customer base.

Mayra will invest this loan in buying hair dyes, perms, hair treatments, etc. Her dream is to own a spa in the center of Manta.
