A loan of $1,100 helped buy sacks of beans for retail food business.

Mercedes Yola's story

Mercedes, 44, is a member of the Virgen de Lujan community bank in the Peruvian "departamento" of Puno. She is married and has 2 children. She only has an elementary school education.
Mercedes has been working with Movimiento Manuela Ramos for five years. She used her first loan, for S/.300 new soles, to buy beans and mushrooms.
Mercedes is applying for a new loan, for S/.3000 new soles, so that she can buy 25 sacks of beans, each of which contains five "arrobas"--a weight measure equal to about 13 kilos or 30 pounds--of beans.
Mercedes and her husband work together. Her husband also works for the town and farms a bit of land.
Mercedes wants to improve her business so that she can make more money. She likes her community bank because it provides a ready source of funds and because the other members are responsible.
