Lidia's story

Lidia is a member of the communal bank "Virgen de Luján" (Our Lady of Luján) located in the district of Tinicachi, province of Yunguyo and department of Puno. She is 55 years old, married and the mother of seven children (five of them live on their own). She studied until second grade of elementary school.

She has been working with the microfinance institution Manuela Ramos for four years. Her first loan amounted to 300 nuevos soles, which she invested in her business. She buys and sells livestock and sells handicrafts. In the picture we see her knitting. Currently she applies for a new loan of 2,800 nuevos soles. She will use the money to buy ten units of fabric (llicllas) and four pigs. She works with her husband, a construction worker.

Her dream is to improve her business and sell more cows to generate more income. What she likes about her communal bank are the meetings because she can chat with her fellow members.
