A loan of $1,175 helped a member to buy materials for the construction of a house.

Alhassan's Group's story

These are teachers of the SLMC Primary School in Kenema city. Teachers of this noble institution have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan of 1,000,000 Sierra Leonean leones for each of the five members in the group. With the help of this loan, this group of teachers will be able to improve on their standard of living. Thirty-five-year-old Alhassan F. is the leader of this group of teachers. Alhassan was born in a place call Taininahun, he is married to a trader and has 2 children who are in primary school. Alhassan is a teacher and has been in the teaching profession for 11 years now. Alhassan is going to use his share of this loan to buy house building materials – bags of cements, sand, iron corrugated zinc, nails, etc. for the construction of a house. School staff from this institution, like many other school staff within SMT’s operational areas, come to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish some tasks that they would otherwise not have been able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of a loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.
