A loan of $1,100 helped to buy phone cards and to pay phone and Internet fees.

María's story

This location is known for its traditional culture and for being just a few minutes from two of the province’s best beaches: San Jacinto and San Clemente.

María is a founding member of the communal bank and is its Treasurer. She comments that she likes the bank because of the seriousness both of the members, who are responsible, and of the institution which always follows through with them.

She is 42 years old, married and has two children who are 15 and 16 years of age and in school. She is five months pregnant with her third child. Her husband drives a semi truck.

She has a business selling phone cards and has phone booths and she also provides Internet access services. She was able to open this business thanks to a prior loan that was used to buy computers and to set up the business. She works every day from 8am until 8pm. She says she does well because there is no other similar business in the area. She also sells soft drinks and Pingüino brand ice cream treats. She tells us that she’s been in business several years.

She asked for the loan to buy phone cards and to pay the monthly telephone and Internet fees in order to continue providing services. Her goals are to continue growing in the business and that her children become professionals and that her baby is born healthy.
