A loan of $1,550 helped a member to invest in her business.

Jessika K.'s Group's story

These are teachers of the R.C Hanga II Primary School in Kenema city. Teachers of this noble institution have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan of SLL 6,500,000 for the entire group. With the help of this loan, this group of teachers will each be able to improve their standard of living. Fifty-five year old Jessika K. K. is the leader of this group of teachers. Jessika was born in Kailahun, she is married and has 2 children who are in college. Jessika is a teacher and a businesswoman. She has been in the teaching profession for 35 years now. Jessika is going to use her share of this loan to invest in her business. School staff from this institution, like many other schools staff within SMT’s operational areas, come to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish some certain tasks that they would otherwise have not been able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf.
